Quantum Dot Enhanced Light Guides for Lighting and Display

The disparate efficiency of single color LEDs makes that light sources emitting the pre-designed light spectra that lighting and display applications need, can only be made at the expense of device complexity, cost and energy efficiency.

By using blue LEDs as the sole primary light source, QD-enhancement can overcome these issues, yet the technology faces issues of regulation on materials, stability and cost.

QUALIDI aims at demonstrating that these limitations can be overcome by means of luminescent, quantum-dot enhanced light guides, a technology that was recently developed by Agfa, KULeuven and UGent, by a concerted research effort on the synthesis and processing of Cd-free QDs and their integration in displays and lighting appliances, with a focus on specialty markets that rely on spectrum-by-design light sources.
