SuperMEX: sustainable transformation of new and landfilled solid industrial residues into metals and inorganic polymers using a SUPERMetalEXtractor.

The SUPERMEX project is part of the SIM programma titled MaReS. “Materials from Solid and Liquid Industrial Process Residues” as it focusses on metal extraction from industrial solid residues and the subsequent valorisation of the residual mineral matrix.
SUPERMEX develops both generic and specific knowledge, ranging from the lab to industrial scale, with respect to two core target areas:

(1) an effective model for the plasma fuming process of Nyrstar’s goethite and Umicore’s lead Blast Furnace slag.

(2) the process of inorganic polymerization and the subsequent foaming/aeration of the cleaned slag resulting in a novel building material with high strength and insulation value.

The MaRes Program is about recycling of ‘Materials from solid and liquid industrial process Residues’, and aims at creating and demonstrating an operational, flexible toolbox to recover metals and valorize residual matrix into building materials.
