ICON project
Started: 01/05/2017, Duration: 36 months
Status: Ended
Program: M3
Project contact: Hunor Erdelyi (Siemens Industry Software NV)

The project entitled FATAM is a SIM ICON project with the title “Fatigue of Additive Manufactured components – Relating AM process conditions to long-term dynamic performance of metallic AM parts”.

This ICON project aims to build up an evolving and online database containing AM material fatigue properties for Ti6Al4V and 316L samples produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Direct Energy Deposition (DED) with fixed optimal scanning parameters.

Furthermore, numerical methods and tools will be developed to support and improve the design of AM structural components for safe fatigue life by accurate prediction of the effect of fatigue-critical factors (e.g. build orientation, surface roughness, staircase effect, porosity…) using validated S-N curve based methods (Multi-Attribute Interpolation of SN-Curves) supported by multi-scale modeling (“Smart” extrapolation SN-Curves).

This project should result in a unique material database combined with novel simulation tools that enable AM service providers and/or end-users to design, build and use reliable structural AM components with predictable fatigue properties.

The project coordinator is Siemens Industry Software NV, forming a consortium with industrial partners Materialise, 3D Systems Leuven, Laser Cladding Venture, Atlas Copco, ENGIE Lab – Laborelec and academic partners/research institutes KU Leuven (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Ghent University (Mechanics of Materials and Structures group) and Flanders Make.

This project is part of:

MacroModelMat: Macro-level predictive modeling, design and optimization of advanced light weight material systems.
