Privacy and data protection policy
Strategisch Initiatief Materialen vzw (hereafter referred to as SIM), the organisation responsible for the processing of data, offers a platform as a virtual research centre, initiated in 2009 by the Flemish Materials Industry and the Flemish Universities (via the website www.sim-flanders.be) where visitors are informed about the sector and can gain additional knowledge through participation in events.
This data protection policy sets out in clear terms what data SIM processes for its users, how it seeks to optimally protect the data of its users and which rights the users can exercise.
By using the website of SIM and the associated services, the user accepts the customs as described in this data protection policy.
The user must thoroughly read the data protection policy before making use of the services offered by SIM. If the user would have questions about the policy of SIM, he/she can contact SIM in writing at the following address:

2. Concerning the processing of your data
2.1 Permission and collection of data
SIM attaches great importance to your privacy. Although most of the information on this website is available without providing personal information, it is possible that the user is asked for personal information. In order for SIM to be able to provide the services set out in its General Terms and Conditions, it is necessary to collect and store the personal data that the user communicates in the context of the registration process, as long as SIM deems this necessary or earlier: when the user requests this data to be removed.
Access to the platform SIM may require an e-mail address specified by the user and a password chosen by him/her (the login details).
Upon registration, the user must fill in a number of details that are necessary for the fulfillment of the agreement. These mandatory data are:
– First Name;
– Last Name;
– Cellphone number;
– E-mail address;
– Events in which one wishes to participate.
In addition, the user gives his/her consent to SIM – and processors acting in the name and/or assignment of SIM – for the processing of his/her personal data.
SIM uses the ‘Google Analytics’ service, a service of the firm Google Inc. that collects anonymous or authorized information that is not of a personal nature, such as the type of browser, IP address, the operating system you use, or the domain name of the website through which you have found our website or through which you leave the website. This allows us to permanently optimize our website for our users or visitors. Through this link you can ensure that the storage and processing of these data is no longer possible in the future.
2.2 Usage of this data
If personal data is used for purposes for which the consent of the user is required, the user will always be asked for explicit, written permission.
SIM mainly collects personal data to provide the user with a safe, qualitative, result-oriented and personal experience while using their services.
The data is used for the following purposes in specific:
a. Keeping participant and guest lists for her events;
b. Contacting these persons in the context of the organization of its events;
c. The exchange of personal and contact details for a contact request;
e. Notifying of new events or other news from SIM or its partners. The user can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time by changing the preferences in his/her account or the newsletter itself;
f. Making adjustments and improvements to the services offered by SIM;
g. The proper and/or optimal provision of customer support;
h. Detecting and preventing unlawful actions or activities in violation of the General Terms and Conditions of SIM.
i. The development or debugging of the services of SIM.
2.3 Sharing with third parties
If data is passed on to other users within the framework of the services provided by SIM, this will only take place under the name entered by the user.
Personal data is only provided to third parties:
- If this is necessary to provide the service offered (for example when processing payments);
- If the user has given his/her explicit permission for this (for example when publishing a contact listing);
- When the provision is permitted under the relevant legal provisions for a specific authority legally competent for this purpose (e.g. in the case of a government investigation).
External service providers of SIM who provide services on behalf of SIM in order to make the service possible are not considered third parties.
3. Security of the data
With the help of appropriate technical and organizational measures, maximum data security is pursued. This is an obligation of means on behalf of SIM.
All information that the user enters when using the website of SIM is encrypted. This encryption seals the data transfer between the user’s internet browser and SIM’s web server and thus prevents misuse of this data. The encryption technique that is used here is SSL encryption.
Rights of the person concerned
4.1. Right of access – information
SIM has tried to explain its policy in clear terms in this document. However, the user has the right, by written request, at reasonable intervals, to obtain additional information about the data stored for his/her person at SIM, about their origin, about the purpose for which they are stored and about the recipient who the data is passed on.
4.2. Right of objection
The user reserves the right to, at all times, withdraw the consent given in whole or in part, which may lead to the inability to use the services of SIM.
The user also has the right to object to the use of his/her data for marketing purposes. For this the user or visitor will address SIM; a written request is sufficient, stating the e-mail address and his/her name as provided to SIM.
4.3. Right to rectification
The user has the right at any time to correct his/her data via his/her profile settings or a written request.
4.4. Right of removal
The user has, at all times, the right to demand rectification or removal of his/her personal data stored with SIM.
For this purpose, a written request is sufficient, stating the e-mail address and his/her name as provided to SIM.
The right to delete your personal data may, however, be limited by statutory retention obligations that are imposed on SIM.
